American Naprapathic Association

The American Naprapathic Association (ANA) is the nation's oldest and largest association of Naprapaths. Founded in 1907, the ANA is a non-profit organization whose members are dedicated to protecting, preserving, promoting and expanding the manual medicine discipline of Naprapathy in all of its endeavors.

Membership is open to all individuals with a Doctor of Naprapathy (D.N.) degree or who is otherwise licensed to practice Naprapathy in their State. There are also affiliated memberships and student memberships available. All of our members have a strong commitment to the philosophy, art and science of manual medicine and sound holistic nutritional advice.

Membership in this organization provides a multitude of benefits. First and foremost, the ANA monitors and fights legislation that could limit you from practicing your profession.

The ANA schedules annual conventions providing excellent continuing health care education. Presenters come from around the world sharing their knowledge and experience in manual medicine and related disciplines. The nnual conventions and various other educational seminars offer you an opportunity to meet colleagues and form valuable supportive friendships with others sharing similar views.

As a member of the ANA you will receive significant discounts to sponsored educational seminars. You are also eligible for membership in any approved state association of naprapathy.

Because ANA is the leader in the field of Naprapathic medicine, we are recognized by the World Organization for Alternative Medicine, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, and the Illinois Board of Naprapathic Examiners as the primary organization representing Naprapathic medicine in the United States.

The American Naprapathic Association furthermore is the credentialing body for all Naprapathic higher educational institutions.

Winter 2011 Update

The profession of Naprapathy is at a critical juncture. Significant adversity from 3rd party payors has significantly impacted our ability to be adequately compensated in the current health care environment.  The uncertain fate of the Health Reform Act is further complicating this issue.

It is necessary for all colleagues in the Naprapathic profession to now join together to reach realistic solutions before we are disastrously affected by the profit-above-everything health insurance industry. It may interest you to know that our representative, for example Rep Pete Stark (D-Calif), chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, sent a letter to the top ten for-profit health insurance companies last year demanding they pass their excessive profits to their customers by lowering premiums. Rep Stark noted that these insurance companies made $9.3 billion in profits for the first 9 months of 2010 (up an avg of 41% over the same period in 2009!).

Despite the top 10 health insurance cartels increasing their profits 250% over the past 10 years - and last year alone they made 12.2 Billion dollars in combined profits - they continue to RAISE the insured's rates and DECREASE Naprapathic and other health provider reimbursements.

As changes occur in health care, our small profession risk being isolated, under compensated, and sometimes completely discounted by the insurance industry, and therefore, the general public alike as they must bow to their insurance companies restrictions. The entire Illinois-based Naprapathic leadership has been intensely focused with finding concrete solutions over the past several years in an attempt to find ways to become more recognized and accepted in the health care paradigm.

The American Naprapathic Association (ANA), the Illinois Naprapathic Association (INA), and the Naprapathic Academy of Science Education and Research (NASER – the education/research arm formed out of the former North American Naprapathic Association) have been working closely with each other to pursue all options to improve our professional stature. We are exploring several paths to allow us to remain practicing our discipline in the way we are accustomed - and for many years into the future. This effort involves certain legislative action and much effort by the above-named parties.

State Representative Daniel J. Burke has unselfishly and strongly supported the Naprapathic profession for countless years. He understands our plight and wishes to help us in any way he can. Senator Pamela Althoff has recently joined him in efforts to improve our standing within the health care paradigm. They understand our current goals and intent to elevate the profession. These supportive Illinois representatives will give the profession a summary of current efforts to elevate our profession.

If you wish to make a fair wage, expand the teaching of our technique, increase the amount of practitioners and continue to legally practice our specialized form of manual / physical medicine, we urge you to attend a special meeting on February 27th, 2011 at the William Tell Holiday Inn in Countryside, IL from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m to support these efforts. Please E-mail Dr. James Kearns, DN, at admin@naprapathy.org to discuss these efforts and find out how you can help move the profession forward. The time for action is now!!!

Please don't forget to keep your dues up-to-date ... also, feel free to donate to our cause at our Support page!

Spring 2010 Update

By Dr. James Kearns, D.N.

Spring is in the air!

As president, I want to keep everyone informed about the continued changes within the profession. I am happy to announce that the ANA and Dr. Rick Reschke will work more closely in the future to ensure the success of each and every naprapath. The ANA has also come to an agreement with Dr. Wayne Chicowicz and the Amercian College of Physical Medicine. The American College provides quality continuing education and the ANA is happy to promote its programs as we look to the future. The ANA will continue to work closely with the INA to promote advances for naprapaths here in Illinois.  My feeling is that naprapaths need to unite more now than ever into a common voice in order to be heard. There are plenty of other health care fields that have passed us because we have not agreed to speak as a common voice.

The semi annual for the ANA was held at the William Tell Inn in Countryside on February 21, 2010. We had physical therapist Adam Wolf present practical information about functional rehabilitation. He included techniques we could use in the office on Monday. We also had a presentation from physiatrist Baljinder Bathla. He spoke about treatment of herniated discs using injections and pain management techniques. The semi annual finished with an ANA board meeting where new directors Rick Bisceglie, Rob Manfredini, and Daryl Newman were appointed as leadership in the profession.

The ANA website is up and running!!! This is a tool to help raise awareness for the profession and your practice. Visit www.naprapathy.org to find out more.  The ANA is continuing to add new members who are looking to be part of the solution by donating their time and creativity. Beginning with the membership drive in February at the semi annual the ANA has added 35 new members. We also have a brand new Chicago-area phone number. It is:  (312) 912-7984

In closing, I want to share the overwhelming sense of cooperation I have had in my position since January. If we continue to work together there is no telling where we can go and what can be accomplished. Keep on working together as a team!

February 2010 UPDATE

NEW BOARD MEMBERS

The ANA is very proud to present our new board president, Dr. James Kearns, DN., who took over his new duties on January 1st, 2010. We are all sad to see Dr. Sharon Devita, DN step down as President. She will be returning for further educational pursuits and she has led the ANA honorably for the past 2 years. In addition, long time board member Dr. Joseph Kosar DN, Elaine Polley DN and Susan Trice DN are also stepping down.

Dr. Kearns brings with him a new vision for the profession and hopes to breathe a brand new vitality into this historic association. He has a thriving practice in Woodstock and will bring his many years of experience and successful business practices to his new position.

In addition to our welcoming in a new president, there are several new board members, including Dr Daryl Newman DN, Dr. Rick Bisceglie DN, and Dr Robert Manfredini DN who will be joining the organization. Dr. Daniel E Varanauski DN will be taking over as Vice-President, Dr Lisa Gold DN will take over as secretary and Dr Jacqueline DeBerard will be treasurer. Please wish the outgoing a fond farewell with us and offer a warm welcome to the new team!

There will also be some shifting of positions in order to accommodate these changes and help be more efficient at meeting our organizational needs and the needs of the membership ranks. The launch of this new website highlights the revitalization and commitment of the ANA to assist it's members in meeting all challenges in the near and distant future.

The current Board of Directors list can be found at the bottom of our About Us page.
